Message from the founder

Educational Development for the Global Child

We are proud to say that this is the first Annual Report for our newly formed foundation incorporated July 25, 2002. To Love Children Education Foundation International Inc. was created out my work for children over the last twenty-five years culminating in the obtaining of a Masters in International Relations from Golden Gate University, San Francisco in May, 2001. My focus on the development of educational programs for girl children in the global south comes from the extensive research from literature that was written on this topic that then became the core of the programs of To Love Children Educational Foundation.

After September 11th 2001 the world’s collective attention turned to the plight of girl’s children education after the collapse of the Taliban in Afghanistan. The New York Times Magazine (September 29, 2002) on its front cover declares "Afghanistan’s Found Generation, Their first semester in the new world." Yet the state of affairs for the education of girl children in the developing world is bleaker than ever as 90 million girls in the world still have no access to basic education. This is an immense and complex problem to solve. The enormity of the dilemma calls for our non profit organization to argue for an education development based approach. The solution will include a building up of a local community based approach to eradicate the lack of adequate access to education for girls.

We are building towards sustainable education development while also seeing that basic needs are met. We will strive always to work to adapt cultural attitudes to be more inclusive of girl education in communities in the global south. To Love Children Educational Foundation seeks to position itself in the long term to be a world wide Non Governmental Organization with resources for girl children in the global south as well as for the disenfranchised children of the developed world. We have started this endeavor with a strategic plan that includes taking the first steps with creating Sustainable Educational Development in a few different areas of the world where we have expertise and contacts to make a difference. There is urgency in this work as there are many other forces beyond culture that are preventing equal and quality education for the local village girl children such as health and poverty.

Our Foundation in its first five months of life created new partnerships with the Junior Organization for Youth founded by a 16 year old High School student, Gary Fox in Southern California, consulting with AGWIN Action Group for Women and Children in Need in Sri Lanka, to find ways to help 260 children with their educational needs after years of war, working in collaboration to lay the groundwork with 6 young women in their work in Kenya to help sustain a school in a rural village, strengthened our partnership and friendship with Care Bags Foundation and Shantidhara Social Service Society, established new friends with the St. Johnsbury Academy a 9-12 high school in Vermont, received our first sponsor with the International Child Art Foundation, opened a new dialogue with AFEE President Mrs. Seynabou Tall to work in partnership to provide for girl education and basic health needs in rural Senegal, joined the Global Youth Action Network, the Global Movement for Children, Bay Area International Development Organization, Idealist.org, preparing to become an official NGO/DPI with the United Nations in the fall of 2003, all to encourage and extend our resources and expertise to reach our mission of the education of the girl child to break the cycle of poverty in the developing world.

In Short, we have been building our Foundation for the long term to foster lasting change through education. Working together we are stronger to create on the global stage, and this requires our commitment, advocacy, volunteer building, and understanding of the complex issues we face. We are confident we will succeed by working together. In that light we align our goals and core values with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the individuals, NGO’s and organizations that support that support the principals of the most widely accepted international convention in history. As we wait to be approved for our 501(c) (3) status, we devote 2003 to securing General Support funds and strengthening our programs while building a strong volunteer community dedicated in helping to give children a voice and opportunity in life through education.

I invite you to read our first annual report and think of the contributions and possibilities of volunteering to make a difference in the lives of children. We need your skills, time, experience, leadership ability, contacts, expertise and money in order to extend education to children in the global south.

Together we can make a difference, if only we work together.

Sincerely yours,

David Kenneth Waldman

Founder/President/Chair of Board

Mural creation is a peace educational component of the international children’s celebration organized every four years by the International Child Art Foundation. The mural, symbolic of collaborative creativity of the world’s children, depicts their visions of the world in the new millennium.

Five Integrated Programs

To Love Children Educational Foundation has five integrated programs designed to establish sustainable educational development for girl children in the developing world. We do this with cooperation from the public, education, business, private, and non profit sectors which allows us to address the complex related issues girls face in the global south.

These programs are:

Human Services, Societal Benefit Program, Public Benefit Program, Girl International Resource Learning Educational Program (GIRL), Rebecca House Publishing Program.

We have identified three (3) short terms, and three (3) medium to long-term objectives in order to accomplish the implementation of our programs. The short-term objective is meant also to initiate educational resource centers, through collaboration with the teachers in the villages for suggested curriculum and the actual catalogue of needed books.

Short Term Projects now under way

Medium to Long Term ongoing Projects

Scholarship Program

The scholarship fund will provide the means for children to obtain higher education and will require awardees to donate a specific amount of time back to their community using the acquired expertise. We have initiated the planning of this program, with the execution to take place in 2003. We intend to offer a substantial number of scholarships a year to girl children in the developing world that want to continue their education to an approved undergraduate institution.

There will be no distinction as to the field of study or discipline a student chooses as their course of study. There is one class of benefit and that is a yearly scholarship gift. Students achieving passing grades can re apply for an additional year or until they finish their degree. All decisions are final will be made by the Scholarship Committee and endorsed by the Board of Directors of To Love Children Educational Foundation. Candidates are encouraged to reapply as many times as needed and failing to gain a scholarship in one year may be a result of funding and not the suitability of the applicant.

There are no limitations or restrictions for any individual who are eligible. There will be no restrictions now or in the future or limitations in the selection procedures based on race or the employment status of the prospective recipient or any relative of the prospective recipient. There will be no limit to the approximate number of eligible individuals as our pool of applicants will reside in all the developing countries of the world according to guidelines set by the United Nations.

As an educational Foundation our procedures and programs will be in place to offer additional tutoring and support for all of our scholarship recipients to offer them the best chances to succeed. Yearly visits to the local will be conducted to make sure programs are in place to support the student.

Child Ambassador International Pen Pal Program

To Love Children Educational Foundation International Inc., is pleased to announce the start of a new, "Child Ambassador Pen Pal Program". The program is to be run by youth in the United States, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other English speaking countries as part of To Love Children's Educational Foundation's new Literacy Program. This program will give English speaking children the opportunity to write letters and build friendships by learning the different cultures of children from other countries, and be a tool and motivating avenue for international children to practice and learn the English language in written form. An added benefit is that children in English speaking countries will have the opportunity to learn another language from a native speaker.

We are in the initial phase of this new program and are looking for Child Ambassador Leaders in each state or local region that can organize youth groups, schools, civic organizations, local businesses and communities to lend their support to this pen pal program. As a Child Ambassador leader you would be a member of our Youth Advisory Board and encourage others to conduct letter writing campaigns, help raise funds to pay for postage so children in the developing world can participate, and work closely with To Love Children to make this program meaningful and successful for all participants.

We will begin this international effort in India and then expand to other parts of the developing world. We strongly encourage the exchange of art, letters, postcards, photos, and reading material between children of the world. To Love Children will help find college students and appropriate volunteers in the host countries to translate and share these letters so children around the world can communicate with each other effectively.

Partners, Sponsors and Alliances

Building Global Relations in today’s Global Forum

AFFEE, Senegal Association Femme Enfant Environment

The AFEE mission is to create sustainable education development as well as creating a sustainable health, economic and environment plan that meets the needs of 1000 children in rural Senegal. To Love Children Educational Foundation has started a dialogue in order to meet the basic medical and educational needs of these children. We will expand into our other programs as we grow as an organization and strengthen our partnership with AFEE. In order to be successful we are now researching and learning the specific needs of the rural communities in Senegal.

AGWIN, Sri Lanka Action Group for Women and Children in Need

AGWIN will assist 260 school children to restart and continue their education without the problem of dropouts and interruption of schooling due to war. We have to provide them school uniforms, bags, books, pens & pencils and other schooling material. Soon after this stage of the program is completed we will assist these families to start their agricultural and livestock activities. This will help them to continue these children’s education. Ultimately we will develop this project as a long term social and educational development program.

TLC in collaboration with AGWIN will secure assistance for school materials for 260 children TLC will send some needed educational school materials such as books, pen and calculators etc .on an ongoing basis to fill the need for supplying 260 children with educational resources. To Love Children will also work with AGWIN to develop and implement the curriculum necessary to teach child human rights to the teachers, children and community, based on the principals of the Convention in the Rights of the Child.

Shantidhara Social Service Society, India

One problem for Shantidhara that first needs to be identified and corrected is the lack of sustainable economic development that contributes to the lack of health resources and educational resources for the education of girl children in these villages. The argument is not to suspend or ignore macro economic solutions but to include a micro economic solution of including girls in the education process. This project will allow these ten villages in India a larger educated workforce to help sustain economic growth along with the skills, knowledge and new experience to transform the present conditions.

JOY, southern California Junior Organization for Youth

Gary Fox Sixteen years old and the co-founder of this High School Philanthropy club they are working with To Love Children in order to meet specific educational needs for children in different parts of the world starting with India and El Salvador. JOY will form the backbone of our Youth Advisory Board as we work together to extend a voice to youth everywhere in the world.

In a brief five months since we incorporated we are beginning the process of building a strong and vibrant volunteer based organization.

Chief Financial Officer

Ronald T. Chang

A message from our CFO

Have you put your charitable intentions on hold because you are unsure if your income is adequate enough to make a substantial gift without adversely affecting your lifestyle? Is the thought of paying substantial capital gains tax so painful that you have held highly appreciated investment assets even though proceeds from the assets could be put to a more productive use? If either of these scenarios is familiar; you may want to consider creating a Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT).

A CRT is a irrevocable trust into which you can transfer assets—such as cash or highly appreciated investment property—that have appreciated in value well beyond their original cost. If established during your lifetime, the CRT can provide you and your spouse with a lifetime income stream, or payments for a term of years that you choose. A CRT may also be established upon your death, providing an income stream for a designated beneficiary. When the income interest terminates, a charity (or charities) that you have selected receives the assets remaining in the CRT.

In some cases, you may want to fund a private foundation with the remaining assets. When properly established, the CRT can provide income, estate and capital gains tax benefits and a lasting gift to a favorite charity.

Ronald T. Chang

For more information: To Love Children Educational Foundation recommends that you consult your financial advisor to see if a CRT is right for your situation. As a service we provide this financial information so you are better informed when you make your contributions to a charity.
