From my Perspective:

“Alone we can do so little~ together we can do so much!”  - Helen Keller

Hi, I’m Annie Wignall and I’m 14 years old. I’m the founder and director of Care Bags Foundation (www.carebags4kids.org), a nonprofit organization I began 3 years ago that provides “Care Bags”, filled with new, essential, safe, fun and age appropriate items to displaced, abused and disadvantaged kids worldwide. I’m also honored to be the youngest member of TLC’s Board of Directors and an honorary member of the Youth Advisory Board.

My volunteer work has taught me so much! It’s helped me to be more thankful for the family and good life I have. I’ve learned if a community works together for a good cause; good things are bound to happen. And I’ve discovered there are a lot of nice grownups and kids out there who want to help—all I had to do was ask!

Great things happen when you volunteer. I’ve made a ton of new friends and have gotten to meet important people, but best of all, doing this has shown me just how good it feels to help others. I like to make people happy, because that makes me happy too.

My advice to you all is to get involved. I really love kids, so that’s what I like to spend my time on. I do something Care Bags related every day.  But you may love art, or reading, or sports, or helping the elderly. Whatever it is, find something you care about and like to do and take action and then volunteering will be fun. Someone once said, “A journey of a thousand miles starts with just one step.” You don’t have to take big steps or do anything huge….smile at a stranger, help out your parents without being asked, clean up your neighborhood, or be a pen pal to a child in another country.  Even though we’re young, we CAN make a difference in the world by the little things we do. All of these things will make a difference to you and to the people you help. I encourage you all to continue to use your time and your talents and your voice to make the world a better place.
